Shingles, they hurt really bad, they don’t hit just older people, they occur when you had a lot of stress in your life, they hit anyone who has had chicken pox, because the virus herpes zoster lies dormant (inactive) in your body. I had them and I’m only 23, I got them becasue I was so stress out about a new job and a new baby. It lasted for about 3 months. Headache.
Sensitivity to light.
Flu-like symptoms without a fever.
You may then feel itching, tingling, or extreme pain in the area where a rash will develop several days later, commonly on your back or neck. The rash progresses into clusters of blisters along the path of the nerve. The blisters fill with fluid and eventually crust over. It takes 2 to 4 weeks for the blisters to heal, although some scars may remain. Hope I helped.

shingles usually hit older people. it’s the same as chicken pox but it has come back to visit again. I suggest you search for shingles photos on yahoo to see what they look like.

I got shingles when I was 18. They started off as red spots like one about quarter size on my forearm and on my bicep then they got these little like puss pockets in them and when I pushed on them it felt like needles going into my skin. It later became very painful because singles attacks nerve endings. It also spread around on my shoulder and the spots on my arm got bigger. It is very dangerous if you get them on your face. I was on Tylenol 3 and 4 ibuprofen every 4 hrs.

    Syptoms…

    Shingles has 2 stages:

The prodromal (pro-DRO-mal) stage — symptoms occur about 2 to 5 days before the rash appears.
The eruptive (e-RUP-tive) stage — skin rash (lesions) appears.

Symptoms that may appear during the prodromal stage include:

Numbness, tingling, itching, or pain in the place where the rash is about to appear
    Fever, sometimes with chills
    Headache
    Nausea

The main symptoms of the eruptive stage involve a skin rash, which usually involves:

Redness of the skin followed by swelling or bumps.
From the bumps, blisters then form that contain clear fluid. The blisters become pustules (pimple-like sores) and crusts (scabs).
    – The rash almost always appears in a band or patch on just one side of the body.
    - Any part of the body can be involved, including the back, chest, abdomen, arms, legs, or face.
    - Symptoms may range from only mildly bothersome to itchy to really painful.
    - New blisters may continue to appear for up to 5 days.
    - Within 14 days, a scab forms.
    - The rash usually goes away in about 3 to 5 weeks.

    Hope this helps

Shingles is caused by a simlair virus to Chicken pox but the same one. It is a myth you are immune if you had Chicken Pox in childhood. They are extremely painful as the virus lives and breeds in the nerves, you will only get them, if you have them, on one side of your body. You need to see a Dr if you a worried as they can be dangerous. You need a prescription for ACYCLOVIR if you have them.

Shingles usually does hit people when they’re older as far as I understand, but I had it when I was 12 years old and under a great deal of stress.

They are very, very painful and usually occur in a band-like pattern of blisters around the torso or neck of the affected individual. From what I remember, they usually only occur on one side of the body.

Mine lasted for several weeks and I have a few small scars and one large scar on my side from when I had them. It was a very painful ordeal and because it is related to a nervous disease, every time I moved, it felt like my nerves were on fire on that side of my body. The blisters themselves appeared individually and in large clusters, too. The largest scar I have is from where there were a cluster of blisters. As I recall, I had other symptoms–mild fever, lethargy….but mainly just the pain and blisters. OUCH.

You can definitely find information on the internet about it.

I hope you’re not asking because you have it….it is seriously killer.

Remember David Letterman was out for like two weeks with his quadruple bypass, but for almost two months with shingles? That should tell you something…..

    Best wishes!

A few years a go I had a very bad cough and I was in agony down my left side…and I truly mean agony. I ended up seeing the emergency doctor at our local hospital who examined me and said that I had probably strained a muscle through coughing so badly, and sent me on my way with some painkillers. Over the weekend the pain got a lot worse and when I woke on the Monday morning I had a bright red rash around my left ribcage which was covered in spots and blisters. A trip to the doctors confirmed it was shingles and I was given some different medication to help ease the symptoms. Believe me, if you have shingles you will know about it as the pain is such that I have never experienced before or since…and neither do I wish too. A friend of mine also had shingles on her face two years ago and she was also in agony…luckily she didn’t have any scars from it.

As a previous answerer said, if you do a search you should be able to find some pictures of shingles on the net.

I had shingles when i was about 14 . Here is my experience

They can occur on any part of the body and is where chicken pox has been laying dormant and have re-appeared due to stress or other factors .

Unlike chicken pox though they are not really itchy they are painful . they are red and usually look and feel like little blisters . It is an aching feeling with sharp pains (like little needles as mentioned above) . . it makes you very uncomfortable , in pain and made me feel very weak .

I used calamine lotion and paracetamol as recommended by my doctor . and disappeared after about a month .

I still to this day get very slight aches in the areas of where it was when i am stressed out .

Hope this helps . But i would see a doctor if you are unsure .

When I started with shingles on my back, it felt like a bite at first a sort of irritating pricky sensation but hadn’t gone away after a week so my mum-in-law looked at it and thought it was ringworm. I went to Dr who said it was shingles and as it was in very early stages he was able to treat me with anti-viral tablets. It had completely gone within a fortnight.
But it is quite contagious to the young, i.e. babies and sick children, old people and those with reduced immunity. I was just very run down at the time. It does attack nerve endings and is a revival of the dormant herpes simplex virus (chicken pox). It was an old wives tale that if you got it on your body and it spread until it met itself then you would die!!! I don’t think that’s true but if it gets that good a hold it will be extreeeemly painful. So see someone about it soon. Good luck.

Shingles is an infection of a nerve area caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It causes pain and a rash along a band of skin supplied by the affected nerve. It is the same virus that causes chicken pox.Anyone who has had chicken pox in the past may develop shingles. It can occur at any age but it is most common in people over the age of 50.
Symptoms usually come in the form of an itchy skin thus triggering constant scratching. The most commonly involved nerves are those supplying the skin, the chest or abdomen. The upper face (including an eye) is also a common site. The pain sometimes persists after the rash has gone, more commonly in people over the age of 60. Other complications are uncommon.
Sometimes a period of stress or illness seems to trigger it.The immune system keeps the virus dormant and prevents it from multiplying.A slight weakening of the immune system in older people may account for the virus multiplying to cause shingles.
The disease is also common with people who have HIV/AIDS or whose immune system is suppressed with treatment such as steroids or chemotherapy.
Loose fitting cotton clothes are best in order to reduce the irritating of the affected area of the skin.Pain may also be eased by cooling the affected area with ice cubes (wrapped in a plastic bag), wet dressings or a cool bath.Oily calamine lotion may be helpful if the rush is itchy. However, one should immediately consult a doctor once the rash or itchy pain comes into being.

Shingles is a crusty band of scabs. It is related to chicken pox. Shingles is itchy and yet painful. It can take some weeks to go completely, and you might feel very unwell and tired.
