Our roof was redone 9 years ago and the shingles are already coming off and curing up, what should we do?

We hired a contractor to redo the roof, should we go after them to fix it?
Seems as though the contractor used sub-standard materials. Most shingles, fiberglass or not do carry a warranty. Most run 15 to 25 years. I would call the original contractor and inquire, have them inspect, then go from there. Also contact your home insurance company and inform them of the problem.

As a contractor I would say either take the reciept back to the place you bought the shingles (if they have a 10-20 yr warranty which most do). If not then it’s time to replace them and doing so with quality materials and quality workers is the key!!!

If you are already having small problems, likely it will worsen. In most shingles you should get at least 15 years so yes, I’d go after the contractor if that is possible. Too try to find out what brand the shingles are and contact the manufacturer and complain. They may credit or replace just the shingles at least.

YES…You should go after the Contractor to replace and correct the problem. All shingles sold in the U.S. By licensed Contractors are 25 year rated (minimum) against defects. If your are already going bad there is all the proof you need. The shingles will be pro-rated like tires and the replacement costs will in all likelihood would reflect that. If the Contractor is legitimate he will have a warranty in writing that spells out what can be done for defective shingles and their installation
If your Contractor refuses to fix your roof. Contact your state Attorney General’s Office/Division of Consumer Complaints and have them investigate the Contractor and situation. I would contact your homeowner’s insurance carrier, but don’t file a claim until you are satisfied with the repair work the contractor did or at the very least the installation Contractor acknowledges the problem and is willing to correct it! Good Luck!

Personal experience with this exact same problem.
Before you go after anyone, determine if your attic/roof area has proper(enough) ventilation. Twenty years is all lower grade (average) shingles are recommended/warrantied for. If you live in a hot summer area, and it gets excessively hot in your attic, you can cut that time in half. Improper ventilation is a roof`s worst enemy. If you need more ventilation, re-roofing time is a good time to add it. Did you keep your original contract/warranty? It should specify what grade shingles were used.
