If my friend has had shingles for 10 days, and it is clearing up, how contagious is it? I have never even had chicken pox…

Shingles are contagious when there are new blisters forming and old blisters healing. Once all the blisters have crusted over, the virus can no longer be spread.

Since you have never had chicken pox, you would not get shingles, you would get chicken pox. That’s how the virus works. Shingles itself is not contagious – no one will get shingles from your friend. These sites explain how it works.

You would probably catch chicken pox, not shingles. Shingles are for people who have already had chicken pox.

It’s not. If you never had the chicken pox because you were vaccinated then you’re perfectly safe -shingles occurs after someone has the chicken pox (it’s a mutation of the virus that remains in your system). If you have NOT been chicken pox vaccinated, then you can catch it (even as an adult) and eventually develope shingles. But you cannot "catch" shingles from a friend.

it usually hits the older folks, but is spreading to younger people. it is related to herpes/chicken pox and once one gets shingles, it’s a nasty virus that lays dormant flaring at times of stress. see your doctor for the vaccination.
