I’ve got flu like symptoms, but my lower back is killing me so is my legs but i’ve got a God awful rotten taste in my mouth. This may sound daft but it tastes like artificial spray snow, those cans of spray snow you use for frosting your windows at christmas time. Its horrible acrid and just nasty. If the flu symptoms and the rotten taste in your mouth indicative of Shingles?

Shingles can only occur if you’ve already had chicken pox. This is because it is the same virus which is reactivated (usually by stress, immunocompromised states).

Shingles is characterised by a dermatomal distribution of pain. This bascially means it affects a strip of your skin. There is usually pain in this area before you get the ’spots’. Shingles most commonly affects you chest area or a region of your face.

The only definitive thing I can say is that if you’ve never had chickenpox you can’t have shingles. My advice would be to visit your doctor/dermatologist who are most qualified to make a decision.

Hope that helps.

I had shingles when I was 20(I am 27 now) and feel like they are coming on again( pain, flu like symptoms). So far no rash but should I wait for the rash to develop to see the doc?

It’s possible to have shingles MULTIPLE times: if you know the symptoms are similar and your doctor treated you previously for shingles, let him know now that you’re having the same symptoms. He might be able to prescribe an anti-viral medication for you.

My father has had it several times. My son is ten and is showing some symptoms of what could be shingles.

No you do not need to be old to get shingles. It is a recurrence of the chicken pox virus in the nerves so all you need to be is a person who has previously had chicken pox to get shingles.

Your son may well have shingles if he ever had chicken pox. Is there a pattern to the blisters? At his ribs? or his head? The virus tends to follow the path of a nerve. It is very painful so get your son checked out.

A few days ago, I visited my grandparents, then I found out that my grandma has shingles, yesterday. While I did not touch her, I am an amateur magician and did a coin trick for her and she DID touch my coin that I brought with me to do the magic trick with. Could I get shingles from that and if so, what would the symptoms be? As of right now, I’m feeling okay, so is there a chance that I won’t come down with shingles at all?

Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox, so if you’ve already had chicken pox and are otherwise in good health, you are unlikely to get shingles.

I know someone who has been told they may be developing shingles on one side of their head based on the symptoms. She first had itching on one side of her head that progressed to numbness and pain. The pain is extreme and there seems to be no pain medication that alleviates it. This progression has gone on for nearly two weeks and no blisters have appeared. Has anyone had head shingles or symptoms like this? If so, what is the treatment and duration?

Has she broken out with blisters since you wrote your message? She should get to a doctor and get an antiviral in the event it IS shingles. If the antiviral is started before the blisters appear the effects from the herpes zoster virus won’t be as serious.

I developed shingles of the scalp a few weeks ago and now have the most aggravating itching. There’s pain as well that I’m told will last for at least a couple of months. I took Acyclovir before the blisters came out as I had headaches, shooting pains and a small swelling on my head for about 4 days and the doctor was sure it would turn out to be shingles. When the blisters came out two days after starting the antiviral drug, they were far less serious than they probably would have been otherwise. The affected area is limited to the right side of my forehead and the scalp area on the right frontal & top area. It’s a nasty disease and can be very, very painful. I now take pain meds because the usual over-the-counter meds don’t do the trick, plus there’s terrible itching which is also helped by the pain meds. Good luck to your friend.
