What is shingles? What causes shingles?

Shingles (Herpes zoster) is a skin rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After an individual has chickenpox, this virus lives in the nervous system and is never fully cleared from the body.

Under certain circumstances, such as emotional stress, immune deficiency (from AIDS or chemotherapy), or with cancer, the virus reactivates and causes shingles. Anyone who has ever had chickenpox is at risk for the development of shingles. It has been estimated that up to 1,000,000 cases of shingles occur each year in the U.S.
The herpes virus that causes shingles and chickenpox is not the same as the herpes viruses that causes genital herpes (which can be sexually transmitted) or herpes mouth sores.

What are symptoms of shingles? How long does shingles last?

Before a rash is visible, the patient may notice several days to a week of burning pain and sensitive skin. Shingles rash starts as small blisters on a red base, with new blisters continuing to form for three to five days. The blisters follow the path of individual nerves that come out of the spinal cord (called a dermatomal pattern) and appear as a band- or belt-like pattern on an area of skin.

The entire path of the affected nerve may be involved, or there may be areas with blisters and areas without blisters.
Eventually, the blisters pop, and the area starts to ooze. The affected areas will then crust over and heal. The duration of the outbreak may take three to four weeks from start to finish. On occasion, the pain will be present but the blisters may never appear. This can be a very confusing cause of local pain.

Is Shingles Contagious?

Yes, Shingles is Contagious. Shingles can be spread from an affected person to children or adults who have not had chickenpox. But instead of developing shingles, these people develop chickenpox. Once they have had chickenpox, people cannot catch shingles (or contract the virus) from someone else.

Once infected, however, people have the potential to develop shingles later in life. Shingles is contagious to people that have not previously had chickenpox, as long as there are new blisters forming and old blisters healing. Similar to chickenpox, the time prior to healing or crusting of the blisters is the contagious stage of shingles. Once all of the blisters are crusted over, the virus can no longer be spread.

People having Shingles often suffer from severe pain for prolong period much before the period the red rashes appear to the time the rash are finally healed. Some complication of this kind experienced by patients is described as post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). In such situation shingles pain persists in the affected area from few months to even few years after it is healed. Both the severe pains of shingles as well as the PHN chronic pain arise from the nerve cells. But the duration and after-effect of treatment are diverse.

Shingles Pain which appears from the outbreak in the initial stage need medical treatment immediately and it is only limited for a certain time period. Comparatively the PHN persist for a longer period and is difficult to heal and are sometimes the pain is quite unbearable.

Study shows that older people tend to experience this unbearable pain more than any other younger people. The pain of PHN sufferers is in fact very agonizing and excruciating and they tend to burn and the sufferers sometimes are incapable to do the daily tasks of normal living.

Shingles Pain Treatment

Doctors today are in constant effort of using various methods to help the patients in reducing the shingles pain. The constant effort brought certain but varying degrees of success. The medication used to treat painful Shingles rashes and blisters infiltrate in the skin and reach the affected nerves. But they are not absorbed extensively into the body bloodstream. Thus medications can be continued for a prolonged periods without causing serious side effects.

A device called transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) can be used to treat patients with PHN. TENS produces low-level electrical current pulses that are very helpful in relieving pain when used to the skin surface. This electrical pulse causes tingling sensations and radiates the stimulation of endorphins production in the skin. Endorphins are natural painkillers of the body.

Doctors further induce an invasive measure that is described as nerve blocks to relieve shingles pain. In this method, local anaesthetic is injected into the area where the nerves are affected. The process is mostly applied to the older patient suffering from PHN who cannot tolerate other medications used to cure the intense pain. Nerve block methods are effective cure to such patients.

Yet another option of providing temporary relief from shingles pain is the Injection of medicines into the spine of the patient. The New England Journal of Medicine published a research done by Japanese clinical study that states that when medicines like steroid methylprednisone combined in certain proportion with the anesthetic lidocaine and injected in spines of the sufferer, it could reduce severe pain of one group by more than 70 percent in comparison to another groups that who was given lidocaine for treating shingles pain.

Just wondering, I’m 15 and I think I have shingles the symptoms I’ve read are fitting pretty much exactly. These bumps are in clusters and some spread but they’re on the upper right part of my chest and back.

I was wondering if they go away on their own? Is medication absolutely necessary? If not, what can I do to prevent them from spreading and itching… and possibly healing up faster?

If they were shingles, you’d know it. They are extremely painful if allowed to progress. They usually show up in a line down one side of the body since they run along nerves. Medication is absolutely necessary because if you allow them to progress and run their course, it could lead to postherpectic neuralgia, an very painful and permanent nerve condition.

While taking the medication, you can use calamine lotion to keep them from itching.

Most of all, get to a doctor. It’s possible that it’s chicken pox and not shingles.

The herpes zoster virus reappears after lying dormant since early chickenpox, then infects nerve cells and skin cells. Itching and burning appear first, followed by a rash that may consist of open sores. The final stage, post-herpetic neuralgia, is the pain that remains long after the virus has disappeared. This phase may last for weeks, months, or even years. It ruins an otherwise pleasant lifestyle. Antiviral drugs do nothing for treating post-herpetic neuralgia. Some herbs, however , have been shown to be helpful.

Shingles, they hurt really bad, they don’t hit just older people, they occur when you had a lot of stress in your life, they hit anyone who has had chicken pox, because the virus herpes zoster lies dormant (inactive) in your body. I had them and I’m only 23, I got them becasue I was so stress out about a new job and a new baby. It lasted for about 3 months. Headache.
Sensitivity to light.
Flu-like symptoms without a fever.
You may then feel itching, tingling, or extreme pain in the area where a rash will develop several days later, commonly on your back or neck. The rash progresses into clusters of blisters along the path of the nerve. The blisters fill with fluid and eventually crust over. It takes 2 to 4 weeks for the blisters to heal, although some scars may remain. Hope I helped.

I don’t really think it is possible. Check out this website. It is possible though that you could have had a very mild case of chickenpox or maybe you have chickenpox before you were one. Once again, check out this webstite. I don’t think you have the risk of chickenpox if you have already had shingles. Did you go to the doctor and be sure that is was shingles and maybe not some other kind of skin irritant? If you are sure it was shingles then, most likely you should have had chickenpox at some point. Were you vaccinated for chickenpox? If so that would be an intersting study.

Varicella zoster is a virus that is part of the herpes family. This virus is responsible for some disease, the most known of all being chicken pox. This condition is more common in children, but adults can develop chicken pox as well. Chicken pox only strikes once in a persons life and it is best that this happens when you are a child. This condition is also highly contagious.

The incubation period of chicken pox is about two weeks. In this time your child will have no chicken pox symptoms. After the two weeks have passed, the first chicken pox signs will actually be symptoms very similar to those of the flu. A mild fever, some coughing and loss of appetite are the first chicken pox symptoms. Unfortunately, many of us do not realize that there are actually telling us that our child suffers from chicken pox. Precisely in this period, children are the most contagious. After a couple of days, chicken pox rash starts to appear on your child’ s body. The first areas that are usually affected by chicken pox are the back and the chest. The chicken pox rash is at first just some tiny red and itchy spots, that will turn into blisters in a couple of day’ s time. The blisters are filled with fluid and they will speared very quickly on the rest of your child’ s body. There are chicken pox cases, where the child has only a few such blisters, but usually he/ she will have at least three hundred

chicken pox blisters. These then turn into crusts and then scab just a few days later.

Chicken pox treatment is mainly aimed at relieving the symptoms that your child has. Itching, which is one of the chicken pox trade marks can be relieved with antihistamines or with oatmeal or baking soda baths. If fever is also a chicken pox symptom that you child is has, then ipubrofen must be given to the chicken pox patient. Do not give your child aspirin, because it can increase the risk of developing Reye’ s syndrome. Antiviral drugs may also be prescribed in chicken pox cases.

Another great thing is that now a chicken pox vaccine is available. This vaccine will not prevent your child from developing chicken pox, however it will make the chicken pox case a lot milder and it will also help prevent some of the chicken pox complications.

For more information about chicken pox vaccine or even about adult chicken pox please review this page http://www.chicken-pox-center.com/

Shingles is a viral infection of the herpes family-Chicken pox actually. Chances are if you are a healthy person, especially if you had chicken pox when you were younger you have absolutely NOTHING to worry about. It usually affects people who are severely undernourished or immune compromised such as old age, HIV, Hep C, Tuberculosis, etc. Vulnerability also may be stress related. Yes it is communicable (passed on) by touching the open pustules and not washing your hands thoroughly. You should be wearing gloves and paper gown if you are going to be in contact with fluid from those pustules. If not, Use good hand-washing and avoid hugging your loved one-because they are painful as well as contagious.
