We know someone with Aids and they have shingles , just being cautious.

Shingles cannot be passed from one person to another.

However, the virus that causes shingles, VZV, can be spread from a person with active shingles to a person who has never had chickenpox through direct contact with the rash.

The person exposed would then develop chickenpox, not shingles.

The virus is not spread through sneezing, coughing or casual contact. A person with shingles can spread the disease when the rash is in the blister-phase. Once the rash has developed crusts, the person is no longer contagious. A person is not infectious before blisters appear.

I have shingles and I wanted to know if it is contagious?

Yes. If you have had chicken pox in the past you can get shingles. However if you have shingles you can not give shingles but you can give someone chicken pox if they have not had it. Chicken pox is caused by a virus. However the body is not able to completely rid itself of the virus. The virus hides in the nerve endings and can reemerge as shingles if the immune system is compromised.

They are highly contagious during the time the rash is active and even before and after. Especially if you are running a fever. Anyone with them should be careful not to be around others. If you know someone who has them, you need to be careful not to touch them and wear a mask if you can.

A friend has shingles and sometimes feels well and at other times not so good. She has gone back to work and is mingling with friends as usual, but still on medication and some still break out.

You would probably recognize shingles by it’s commonly known other name, Chicken pox.

Chicken pox is a virus in the herpes family (herpes zoster) and is of course, highly contagious. Typically an outbreak lasts about 3 to 5 weeks. Once you get it, you typically have the virus in your system for life but your immune system keeps it supressed.

However, over time, if you do not come into contact with someone with chicken pox, your resistance to the virus lessens and the virus in your system may reactivate causing shingles. Additionally, people under stress or with compromised immune systems can also have the virus reactivate.

Wikipedia has an excellent webpage about shingles aka chicken pox aka herpes zoster.

EDIT: To clarify a point of confusion, shingles is not contagious in the way that it will cause other people to get the shingles.

It is highly contagious in the way that if a person has not been vaccinated or has never had the chicken pox, that person will contract the virus and come down with the chicken pox.

The blisters cease being contagious when they are dried out.

My friend has Shingles and sometimes she drinks out of my drink but she doesn’t put her mouth on it (like a bottle of soda and tips it to pour into her mouth)..

I hope it isn’t contagious in anyway.
I HAVE had chicken pox.

No. Shingles is not contagious. If you had NOT had the chicken pox, however, you could get the chicken pox from contact with your friend.

p.s. Regardless of this fact, it really is not a good idea to share sodas. She could transfer other illnesses to you unwittlingly (or visa versa).

I have a 9 month old baby who has not been vaccinated with the chicken pox shot yet and two weeks ago my dad came over to visit. The day after he left he found out he had shingles. He didn’t know it when he visited us. Would he have been contagious on that day to my baby. He didn’t hold her much. Maybe a couple of minutes. It has been 2 weeks.
My mom wrote this

It’s very possible your baby will get chickenpox. The average incubation period is 14 to 16 days but can be shorter or longer. If three or four weeks have passed and your baby doesn’t come down with them, she’s probably going to be ok.

If my friend has had shingles for 10 days, and it is clearing up, how contagious is it? I have never even had chicken pox…

Shingles are contagious when there are new blisters forming and old blisters healing. Once all the blisters have crusted over, the virus can no longer be spread.

Since you have never had chicken pox, you would not get shingles, you would get chicken pox. That’s how the virus works. Shingles itself is not contagious – no one will get shingles from your friend. These sites explain how it works.
