As a disease chicken pox is considered not to be very harmful to a healthy pacient. Recent studies have although showed that it is the leading death bringer compared to measles, mumps, whooping cough and Haemophilus influenzae type B meningitis.

Some 14,000 people are admitted each year into hospitals for chickenpox, 60% of them being children. From 1000 individuals only 5 require hospitalization, and in the worst of cases this disease can prove to be fatal. The type of people witch are at the greatest risk of dying from this disease are actually adults, followed by infants, but from the 100 pacients to die from chickenpox 40 were still children. A vaccine could be used to prevent all of these, however recent studies have shown that the number of pacients is the same in hospitals.

One of the good aspects of the disease is the fact that it actually gives immunity to the body making the chance of getting ill again from this very slim. Aside from itching a few rare complications might appear in pacients.

20% of people who have had chicken-pox might later on in their lives suffer from a reactivation of shingles.

Itching, being the most common complication of the varicella infection, can be easily alleviated with some simple home made remedies.

Secondary Infection and Scarring may also appear; small scars usually remain after the falling of the scabs but this doesn’t last long, the scars clearing up after a few month. In the case of itching there is an all other problem, Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria sometimes causing infection in the pacient. Children are the most in danger of this kind of complication because of the simple fact that they are more likely to scratch. Also in children another rare complication would be year infection leading sometimes to hearing loss.

Bacterial Superinfection is the most common serious complication of chickenpox being caused by group A streptococcus. Although mild and not very dangerous its spreading to muscle, fat or even the blood can lead to life threatening situations such as the necrotizing fasciitis (the so-called flesh-eating bacteria) but this is still very rare. Persistent or recurring high fever, redness, pain, and swelling in the skin and in the tissue beneath and even pneumonia are some of the symptoms. In the case of pneumonia the most likely people to suffer complications are pregnant women, smokers, and those with serious medical conditions, serious complications appearing in some cases caused by varicella: lung scaring that makes the pacient’s breathing very difficult.

More complications would even be brain and central nervous system damage or even strokes, but as said they are extremely rare.

Doctors don’t know, I hoped maybe some ordinary person might know.

There are reports in the medical literature on the use of very high doses of vitamin C (a combination of daily injections and high oral dosing) for the treatment of shingles.

Frederick R. Klenner, M.D. spent his career researcher the use of high doses of vitamin C for the treatment of a variety of viral diseases, including shingles. Thomas E. Levy, M.D. has written a book discussing Klenner’s work along with that of hundreds of others on the use of Vitamin C for these types of ‘untreatable’ conditions. The book is called: "Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases , & Toxins – Curing the Incurable". It was published in 2002 by Xlibris Corp. It discusses hundreds of research studies on this issue.

Here is a quote from p.80 on Klenner’s work with treating shingles: "Klenner treated a series of eight adults who had shingles. A 2,000 to 3,000 mg dose of vitamin C was given by injection every 12 hours, and 1,000 mg was given orally every two hours. The severe pain associated with the skin lesions, which can often persist for weeks before completely resolving, was completely gone in seven of eight patients within two hours of the first vitamin C injection. Although no pain-killing medications were administered, the pain relief was permanent. The skin lesions, which can persist for weeks, had completely resolved in seven out of eight patients within 72 hours. Each patient received from five to seven total injections of vitamin C."

Dr. Levy lists these medical journal references for the sources of the quoted information:

If you decide to try this approach you will need to find a Naturopathic Physician or that rare Medical Doctor that has knowledge of high dose nutrient injection therapy.

Best wishes and good luck.

I have been diagnose with Lupus and just found out today that I have shingle (with the red spots on my leg inside and out, and very, very, painful) Is there any chance these two are compatible with each other?

Shingles is the reactivation of the chicken pox you had probably as a child. It lies dormant in your system and then one day,BAM, reactivates. Shingles is incredibly uncomfortable from what I understand and you have my sympathies!
Since it is a reactivation of the Herpes Zoster virus, then yes, you are contagious to people (just like a child with chicken pox) until after the scabs have formed on your last blisters. The people who are most at risk around you are infants and the elderly or the immunocomprimised(weakened immune systems) and anyone who has not had chicken pox or the vaccine. Go here for more information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herpes_zoster

Just like a celiac (which I am), your immune system is going to be a little bit different and you are going to be slightly more susceptible to certain infections. I am assuming you have not been on any prednisone treatment (due to just being diagnosed), so I will leave that bit out.
Here is a really good link to a forum that I think you will find very helpful, and includes a discussion about lupus and shingles.

http://www.wehavelupus.com/message-board-forum/about3714.html

If you have not had the rash for too long, it is not too late to get on some anti-virals that could shorten the length of the course of the shingles. I wish you a speedy recovery and the best!

Unless you mean within the mouth/throat or ears, you don’t get internal shingles. The virus (varicella-zoster) lies dormant in the dorsal root ganglion of peripheral nerves. In plain English, that mean the sensory (pain feeling) part of nerves that supply, basically, the outside of the body (and mouth, throat, ears etc).

Viruses are extremely tiny- much smaller than bacteria. They invade individual cells and turn them into tiny factories to make more viruses. The pharmaceutical community has developed antibiotic after antibiotic to target an ever-growing group of bacterial pathogen, yet few medicines today work on viral infections. Health-care practitioners have little ammunition when it comes to viruses.

Viral diseases include colds and flu, chicken pox, hepatitis, measles, herpes, viral pneumonia, shingles, Epstein Barr virus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), AIDS, and numerous others. That are also a host of intestinal viruses that cause diarrhea and other life-threatening symptoms. Viruses cause serious health difficulties each year.

In my opinion, aiding the good guys- experts call it enhancing host resistance- is the way to go. I think it’s a crying shame that natural supplements and other immune system boosting herbs aren’t more widely used. Instead, doctors keep writing prescriptions for antibiotics, which gradually breed stronger, more virulent germs that require stronger, and always more expensive, antibiotics.

Generally speaking, pharmaceuticals have just one active ingredient with which to fend off an infectious invader. That’s like going into battle with one bullet in your rifle. What’s great about natural supplement is that each one contains many, even hundreds, of biologically active compounds, some in dose ranges that might provide real benefit to us humans. Natural supplements give your body an entire arsenal from which to select the weapons it needs.

In the last few years, colostrum and a number of its individual components have been seriously studied for their effects against a variety of viral diseases. As with the bacteria pathogens, colostrum’s ability to help with viral infections is more likely due to immune support and the combination of substances than to any specific antibody reaction.

Colostrum anti-viral properties include:

-Lactoferrin, an iron binding protein with antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is currently being studied for its effects against the HIV virus, herpes, and even cancer.

- Cytokines, which regulate the intensity of the immune response. They are known to boost the production of antibodies important in fighting viral infections.

- Leukocytes, the white blood cells that engulf invading organisms, including viruses.

- Proline Rich polypeptide, is a small protein chain in colostrum with the same ability to regulate the immune system as the hormones of they thymus gland, as reported by a 1979 study published in Immunology.

Proline Rich poly peptide helps regulate the immune system to maintain balance between under and over-activity- extremely important for those with autoimmune disease. It is also a very powerful anti-inflammatory agent, which may help relieve painful flair-ups. Proline-Rich polypeptide also stimulates the body’s immune cells to produce cytokines: immune- regulating proteins that regulate the duration and intensity of the body’s immune response.

In a 1998 study conducted at the laboratory of Virology, Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy, Polish Academy of Sciences, Wroclaw, Poland, it was shown that when praline rich polypeptide isolated from bovine colostrums was added to the immune cells found in the membrane lining the abdominal cavity and viscera immediately after virus absorption or one day before or after viral infection, infected cells were better able to inhibit virus replication.

Proline rich polypeptide is one of the key component that virologists all over the world are researching on in the battle against the ever growing virus threat.

I have no doubt that colostrum is effective against many types of viruses, as these studies show. Notice that researchers are not saying that colostrum immune factors and other components are effective against every type of virus. But they help a great deal on several significant diseases.

If you are suffering from viral infection such as herpes viral infection on your skin, apply colostrum powder and some water to the infected skin area 3 times a day. The part of the skin will become dry and will heal much faster than other methods.

Also…those of us who can’t afford health insurance will have to suffer through this very painfull disease (not to mention a host of other dilapidating diseases) because hey…Mortgage comes first. How can you justify non-socialzed health insurance when many Americans simply cannot afford it (health ins.) at the prices now in effect… and how much is Bush responsible for making health ins out of reach for the average American.

Bush’s Medicare Plan D with its deductibles makes it very difficult to obtain expensive medications. He also assists Big Pharma to maintain their patents as long as possible. His priorities are wrong he should put health before War.He should also introduce price controls and enable people to buy for less abroad

Is shingles highly contagious? What if the person is not broken out at the time and my face touches their face, would i still get it? What is shingles exactly? If they are broken out and my face touches their face would I get shingles?

its only really contagious if there is a breakout. shingles is caused by the chicken pox virus, and is always dormant in your body once you catch it. however you cant pass it on to other people unless you are having an outbreak. typically, shingles outbreaks happen when people are already sick or when they are having immune system problems (such as people with HIV)

Shingles is essentially the adult version of chicken pox. After you get chicken pox, the virus hides in your dorsal ganglia and wait. When the body gets immuno-compromised, the virus is sometimes re-released and infects the body.

The virus travels from the dorsal ganglia down nerves to specific locations and can branch off into different nerves. The symptoms are similar to chicken pox except there it deals with the nerves as well increasing the pain and hence severity.
